There had been so many people endorsing the Furby and some of the functions of Furby are actually not as awesome as what they claim to be.
1) Furby can learn new English words as you interact with it.
The idea that a toy could be so smart that it could evolve its vocabulary, would have been very nifty, if that was true. Let’s be completely honest here: The Furby is programmed to sprout more English words when you play with it over time. Its vocabulary, and the way I speak, are completely different. If it does learn English, then it must have learnt it from a phantom.
2) Furby can interact with another Furby Boom/Party Rocker.
If interaction means randomly shouting phrases intermittently at each other or singing together, then yes, they can interact with each other. However, the interactions are repetitive, and after a while, it gets noisy and annoying.
3) Furby app allows you to play games with your Furby.
I do not have the longest patience in the world. That said, I am definitely more patient than your kid, and I can’t even deal with the Furby app. The link between the phone app and Furby can be very slow and spotty. You also have to poke the Furby every few minutes to ensure that it doesn’t go to sleep while you play with the app, and several functions like “hatching an egg” or “going to the toilet” will take a long time. By long time, I mean looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. I doubt any child would have the patience once the novelty of it wore off, and you have to hatch a hundred eggs, if I’m not mistaken.
4) Furby changes personality.
When I first got my Furby, I was pretty excited. I thought it would change personality as I played with it, like what the box claimed, but after a day with my Furby, nothing happened and it became somewhat of a chore to interact with the same character.
It had the same few reactions and there was really nothing fun about poking an innate object in the tummy or pulling its tail, much less to pet its not so soft fur, just to get a reaction out of it. So, I turned to Google and it directed me to the Furby FAQ section whereby nothing asked was given a direct answer. All they had to say was to play with your Furby.
Undeterred, I turned to Wikipedia and finally, it taught me how to change Furby’s character. Basically, you have to repeat an action for several minutes before it changed personalities. For example, keep feeding it non-stop for a few minutes, etc. I cannot tolerate blasting loud music at it for more than 5 minutes to a toy. It is annoying. And some actions like pulling its tail or shaking it upside down, is very tedious and the personality does not stay for long before it reverts to its original personality.
After the initial few days, I got bored.
The Furby Party Rockers are even worse. My Scoffby is a complete waste of money and doesn’t even move. All it does is talk gibberish, screech, scream and sing.
For those who are contemplating if you should buy a Furby, ask yourself this. Are you buying it for yourself or for a child? If you have the extra cash, by all means go ahead and buy one for yourself, but I feel that it is not a suitable or worth it gift for children. They will probably get bored with it in less than a day. A child would get more use out of a tablet, scooter or bike.
If you are still getting a Furby, then you will have to take note that they require a specific type of screwdriver.
Furby Boom’s base
As you can see, the hole for the screwdriver is not very wide and despite having a toolbox at home, I had to search for a long time to find one that will fit. It would have been very helpful if they included the size of the screwdriver needed on their box.
Furby Party Rockers’ base
And one last thing, the batteries for the Furby Boom does not last. I used normal double A batteries bought from Toys R Us and it lasted for 2 days. I changed them to stronger ones and they lasted for another 5 days. Note that every single battery change requires tinkering with the screwdriver, so I gave up and now it’s lying in a corner with no power. With the atrocious price tag, you would think that Hasbro would make it rechargeable. =_=
