“The Cuckoo’s Calling” by Robert Galbraith

This is a really wonderful read, worth every cent of the US$16.79 that I paid for.

I could “see” the places in my mind’s eye, visualise the characters, feel what they felt as if the story is unfolding right in front of my eyes. It was saddening when I reached the end of the book. I can’t wait for the next novel of the same series to come out in 2014.

It is a great crime novel and it’s probably cheaper to get the paperback version. I’ll say it’s worth it even if it cost over $20. Double thumbs up!!

“Shit My Dad Says” by Justin Halpern

It’s been a while since I’d done a book review. I’d actually finished this book quite a while back and picked it up to re-read again recently.

Bought it for $6.59 on Kobo.

It’s funny yet insightful. Makes good light reading material. I would definitely recommend it to people who likes a good laugh.

However, for a book that I could finish reading in a couple of hours, I’m not sure it is worth $ 6.59. That’s entirely up to your own discretion, of course. I just tell myself that I can always read it many times. (>人<;)

By the way, I’ve been reading daily, so I’ve finished quite a few books but haven’t found the motivation to write book reviews.

NLB Book Exchange 2013

This happened on the 18th of May, about 4 weeks ago. Well, since nobody can participate until next year, I thought it doesn’t matter when I write this as long as I write it before the book exchange next year.

A few days prior to the book exchange, May (one of my student’s mum), told me about the book exchange and so I packed about 40 over old books and brought them to the library at Westmall to exchange them for coupons. The coupons would be used on the 18th to exchange for the books that I want. However, all the libraries in Singapore have stopped collecting books for the exchange. If I wanted to participate, I would have to go down to the Central Public Library in Bugis. Yes, so I lugged 40 over books in an auntie trolley to Bugis.

On the event day, May’s husband offered to drive us there. May wanted to beat the crowd and pick out the books she really wanted so being the first few in the queue would give her an advantage. They picked Shortcake and I up at 4.15am. YES, 4.15AM. And the bunch of us arrived there dark and early, to catch the security guard sleeping while on duty.

Of course we were the first ones there. It was a good 1 hour plus before another person arrived. She took the taxi to chop place for her friends.

We started to chop places by queuing with our auntie trolleys. I didn’t have one so I borrowed mine from another student’s mother.

By the time it was 7am, the queue had stretched all the way back till we could no longer see the end from where we were. I don’t regret going over so early to queue, but it was very embarrassing when the news crew asked if they could interview us and take our photos. We didn’t agree but if you watched the news that evening, you might have seen us there. We told them we started queuing at 6am so that we don’t appear so kiasu, and that next year, nobody would try to be as early as us. I don’t want to wake up at 3am.

These are the books that I picked. I’ve managed to grabbed some books from the Shopaholic series, the book from the Taxi driver guy who had a famous blog in Singapore and then some comics and other novels. They have basically everything from Dan Brown, Sandra Brown, Anne Rice, Nicholas Sparks, Stephen King, anything really.. Even books for children.

I will definitely participate again next year. Shortcake was telling me that I should have gotten more of the Dan Brown and Sandra Brown novels. I took some but put them back as I already have them in my ebook.

Warm Bodies

Short book review on a book I’ve recently read.

It’s Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion.

20130610-013202.jpg

Printscreened the photo on my phone.

It was also made into a movie and I first got to know about it when I saw the advertisements for the movie. Then, I watched a YouTube video by Michelle Phan recommending this book so I bought it on Kobo.

To sum up the whole book, it’s about a zombie who changed and slowly became alive because he fell in love with a girl after eating her boyfriend’s brains.

Forgive me if I think that it’s a little hard to accept. Morbid really. Is it true love from the zombie or just an effect from eating the boyfriend’s brains?

The delivery of the story is great, but the plot fell a little short. (; ̄ェ ̄)All they did was fall in love with each other and problem solved. What kind of plot is this?!

I’m left feeling rather disappointed especially after all the hype this book has garnered.

Not worth the money.

P.s. As for the movie, I would definitely try to watch it. I’m curious about how they would portray the inner thoughts of R (the zombie).

Unbearable Lightness

I’d just finished reading Unbearable Lightness by Portia de Rossi. It’s very inspiring and I would recommend everyone to go read it.

It’s a book that made me reflect on myself and the epilogue is really touching. For a book on a person recovering from bulimia and anorexia, it was less “beware or else” and more vulnerable. It is truly a very relatable and enjoyable read.

I bought the eBook version from Kobo for $9.39.
